A baby girl was born at 4am on Monday - all fit and well.

Congratulations to Jim from all of us here at DSB.

New player announcement!

After almost a year without a soprano player of our own, we have now appointed James McFadyen. He will take up the position following the Bridlington Lions Carol concert on Monday 15th December.

We have also recruited Clare Avery onto the horn section. She will sit alongside Denise on the first horn position.

Both of these recruits have a very good track record with brass bands, and will add some class to our growing band.

A fantastic Christmas present at the end of 2014!

Letter to the Driffield Times & Post

Following our Christmas concert on Sunday 30th November, one of the audience members wrote into the local newspaper. This is what it said;

Silver Band concert strikes right chord.

What a lovely way to spend a few hours on a Sunday afternoon, listening to the Driffield Silver Band in the Old Town Hall play a collection of music including some well known Christmas Carols.

The charm and warmth, combined with his humour makes the band leader (think he is called Andy??) a very likeable chap who leads his orchestra very well. Today he gave us words of wisdom, some thought provoking and some very sensible......stand in front of a car and get tired or behind it and get exhausted! Think it through...

My Vocal Chords are warmed and ready for their next outing at the Carol Concert at All Saints Church which I'm sure will be equally as good and will not disappoint.

Thanks you for the time and effort all the band members put in to give us these lovely sounds to enjoy.

Comments like these make it all worthwhile.

Some Player Updates
I have to announce that having been at a number of rehearsals, Alex Cook has decided to join us on tuned percussion. He is a fantastic addition to the band, he made his debut with the band at the Armistice Concert last week.
Additionally I am glad to let you know that after taking a short break from the band, Louise McDonagh has come back to us, just in time for the Christmas preparations. It is great to have her back and we hope that this will be a continuous stay...

More Good News!

On Monday this week, our Chairman and Principal Cornet player, Richard along with our Solo Cornet Player Jo-Anne became grandparents for the first time! Isabella Rose was born to their daughter Tasha, weighing in at 7lb 5oz.

Congratulations to them all. Their titles from now on are Gramps and Nan!

1st November 2014
A New Player!

At our rehearsal on Friday, we had a new Baritone Player in the shape of Richard Cook.

Richard has recently moved to the area, and took part in our open rehearsal on the 18th October.

A big welcome to Richard, he will be playing for us at the Children's Armistice Service on Sunday 2nd November.

28th October 2014
Congratulations (part 2)!
We have more good news. Former DSB baritone player Jen Meadows has just got herself married to trombone player David Murray. Best wishes from all at DSB to you both!

26th October 2014
Congrtatulations

Following their visit to the band on Friday night, and spurred on by the pure emotion generated by returning to play for us, Joe Thompson & Rebecca Kitson announced today that they are now engaged to be married!

Congratulations to you both, may you have a long and happy life together.

You'll need to get in early if you want to book the band to play...

26th October 2014
Visitors at rehearsal

On Friday 24th October we had a few visitors.

Amanda Rank came over from Holmfirth for the last time this year, and sat on the front row.

Former soprano cornet player and great friend of the band, Joe Thompson came back to sit in on sop again, and he brought along his girlfriend Rebecca Kitson to play 2nd horn.

It was great to see them all, and Joe and Rebecca have agreed to play for us at our Christmas Concert on the 30th November!

8th October 2014
Open Practice

Driffield Silver Band are holding an
Open Practice at Driffield School Performing Arts Centre
on Sat 18th October.

The event will run from 1:00pm and 3:00pm.

Are you interested in playing a Brass instrument?
If you have played before would you like to return to playing?
The band extends a very warm welcome to Mr Richard Wilton who will be the bands Guest Conductor for the event.
Current players of the Youth Band are especially invited to join in.

Why not come along.

19th September 2014
Stepping Down - but only for a short time.

Today, I have to announce that due to commitments at work, Louise McDonagh has taken the decision to take a step away from the band for the time being. She has every intention of returning - probably into 2015, unless we can talk her into coming back sooner! We wish her all the best, and really hope to see her soon.

This now means we have a vacancy on horn that we need to fill. If anybody feels suited to the challenge, please use the Contact Us section of the website.

Sad news
Unfortunately, I have to tell you of the very sad passing of Dee Horner this week.
Dee was the mother of former bass trombone player Peter, and was also the saviour of our library. She spent hours sorting it back into a manageable form.
A more dedicated supporter is very hard to come by, and as Chairman of the East Riding Youth Brass Band, she brought our two organisations closer together.
Our sincere condolences go out to her family.

September News Update...
Pat Hunter returned for his first full rehearsal since his operation. Glad to say he has had no adverse affects so intends to be back full-time now. This is great news for the band as one of our other BBb bass players, Claire Rogers, now has a date for her back operation, which will put her out of action for a while.
Mal Kellett has had his shoulder operation and is recovering well. Although he is to keep it immobilised at the moment, he should return stronger than before.
Des Milburn has had another setback in his recovery from multiple heart attacks, and will be having another operation very soon. We all wish him the very best, but don't expect to see him return until 2015.

30th July 2014
More News!

There have been a few changes since the last bulletin.

Pat Hunter has been into hospital to have a quad-bypass operation. Not surprisingly, this has meant he has had to let the band take a back seat! He is recovering well, and we hope to see him back soon.

Despite still suffering from acute mgraines, Jo-Anne Gregg has returned to the band to bolster the solo cornet bench. Welcome back Jo-Anne.

Fred Leason has decided to step down from the band as a full-time member, though will make himself available to deputise with us when he is required.

Brian Robson has returned to the BBb Bass chair he vacated at the begining of the year, which will bring us back to 6 basses once Pat Hunter returns.

11th June 2014
Another player moves on...

It is with regret that I have to announce that Michael Townend has decided to relinquish his position with the band. His life has taken a number of positive turns over the past few months, which has meant he has moved further away to a distance he feels is prohibitive to mainaining the commitment required. We wish him all the best in the future, and I'm sure we'll all stay in touch.

8th May 2014
New Galleries

We have added some new photo galleries - one from the Christmas Social event, and another from the CD Recording.

Thanks must go to Richard Gregg for the Christmas Social photos, and also to Terry McDonagh for the CD recording photos.

6th April 2014
New Solo Horn Player

In the past few weeks, due to increasing workload and family commitments, Margaret Milburn reluctantly had to step down from the band. She returned to playing last April whilst Rachel was off on Maternity leave. She became an integral part of our team in that short spell. This now means that Rachel can return to the Solo Horn chair, just in time for the CD recording next week.

Best of luck to both. I'm sure we will see Margaret back when things ease off.

DSB Launch the on-line shop!
Today we have managed to launch our on-line shop. Not many items available just now, but we hope to increase the product range shortly.

Condolences

Exactly one year ago today, I anounced the sad passing of the Brass Band Stalwart, Jim Davis. Today I had the honour of attending the funeral of his wife Eileen.

So sad that they have both gone, but now they are together again.

All our condolences to their daughter, Janine.

23rd February 2014
First Concert of the Year

We opened our concert programme of 2014 with a rousing Last Night of the Proms style concert in the Old Town Hall in Driffield. This concert also marked the first joint concert between ourselves and the Driffield Male Voice Choir. This event certainly showcased the combined talents of two great musical organisations in Driffield.

For more details on this concert please go to the Concert Log 2014, or follow this link http://www.driffieldband.com/log2014.aspx

22nd February 2014
Another percussionist!

At our rehearsal on Friday this week, we had a visitor in the guise of Reuben Shotts. He is a talented percussionist on both kit and tuned, he really enhanced the rehearsal with his musicianship.

He would be a massive addition to the band, so we have invited him back again.

Let's hope that he becomes a more permanent member.

Watch this space...

16th February 2014
More player moves

After playing with us for a year, Luke Gledhill has impressed us with his dedication and ability on 3rd Cornet. As a result he has been moved up onto the lead 2nd Cornet chair to create a formidable team with Michael Townend.

Additionally, Katie McDonough has returned to the band on the back row. This recruitment adds to our strength in depth and gives us a really strong cornet section.

At our rehearsal on Friday this week, David Hook agreed to try out playing kit percussion - a position he hasn't held for 22 years!

We have been looking for a drummer for many years, and we hope that it'll not be long before he is back in the swing of things.

A new recruit on Soprano is what we need now to complete the lineup...

26th January 2014
Player Departure

In recent months, his career has taken him increasingly further away from Driffield, and as a result his almost perfect attendance record has seen a significant dip. As a result, our iconic Soprano Cornet player, Joe Thompson has taken the decision to leave the band.

He is in the process of moving out of the area in the forthcoming weeks, and we wish him all the very best of luck.

Joe has played with Driffield Band since around 2002, and was voted the best soloist on the 2005 tour of St Affrique. He will be sorely missed, and now we will have to try to fiill his shoes!

If anybody is a Soprano Cornet player and is interested in taking over this chair, please do not hesitate to call.

24th January 2014
Calendar is Filling Up
We are pleased to say that our engagements calendar is filling up nicely for 2014. As we concentrate on quality over quantity, if you wish to book the band for this year, please get in early...

12th January 2014
New Player, Returning Player and Player moves

We had our first rehearsal in 2014 on Friday 10th January, and there are some player announcements to let you know about;

New Player:

  • David Hook has agreed to join us on Cornet.

Returning Player:

  • Michael Gregg on 2nd Trombone.

Retiring Players:

  • Kerrigan Redman on 3rd Euphonium has decided to step down from the band. After 7 years of dedicated service, and a very heavy workload organising our Solo Contest in 2013, Kerry felt the time was right. We all wish him the very best, and I am sure we will see him help us out if he can.
  • Vince Turton on BBb Bass has also decided to step down from the band. He helped us out for a season covering the long-tem BBb bass vacancy and we also wish him all the success in the future.

Injury:

  • Brian Robson has injured his shoulder, and has opted to switch from BBb Bass to 2nd Baritone to minimise the damage to the injury.

Position Moves:

  • To accommodate David Hook, Malcolm Kellett has stepped back up to playing the repiano part alongside Wendy Brayshaw.
  • To accommodate Michael Gregg, Ian Buckton has returned to playing 1st trombone alongside principal player Heather Curnow.
  • To cover the BBb Vacancy, Pat Hunter has agreed to switch from EEb bass.
  • To accommodate Brian Robson, Claire Rogers has agreed to switch from Baritone to BBb Bass.
  • Gill Mill has moved up from 4th Euph to 3rd.

As you can see, things seldom stay the same, however we are still looking for a percussion section to complete our team. If you wish to be part of this fantastic organisation, please don't hesitate to contact us!
