The Final Performance of 2013

The shoppers of Tesco in Hornsea were blessed with the presence of DSB to help them with their Christmas Shopping today. Three hours of carols where we managed not to repeat any of them!

A fantastic turnout from the band, and a really great sound. Now we can spend time with our families!

Our first rehearsal back will be on Friday 10th January at the Bell Hotel in Driffield.

We hope everybody has a fantastic festive period, and continues to support us in 2014!

Band Awards 2013

At the Christmas Concert on the 8th December 2013, the annual awards were presented to the band.

This was the first year of the Fred Robson Memorial Trophy, this is to be presented to the under-18 player who shows the most promise across the year. The winner was Joel Asbrey.

The next award was the Norman Blades Trophy, presented to the most improved player within the band, and that was awarded to Brian Robson.

The final award was the Tony Wilson Trophy. This is presented to the member who has made the most significant contribution to the band across the year. This year it was awarded to the Entire Committee.

Injured - out of playing for the next few weeks!

Principal 2nd Cornet Player Mal Kellett has managed to injure his shoulder, and will therefore be unable to play over the next few weeks. We wish him all the best and that he has a speedy recovery!

This will mean we have to try to recruit some cover for him for our Christmas concerts, so if you are interested in helping us out, please use the 'Join the Band' section under the 'Contact Us' heading above.

Player Moves

Following the success of the Armistice Concert on the 10th November, there have been a number of player movements within the band.

In no particular order they are as follows;

  • Joel Asbrey has been promoted to the 2nd Euphonium chair.
  • Rachel Bell has returned from her maternity leave, and will sit on 1st horn with Denise to get back into practice.
  • Gill Mill has moved from 2nd Baritone to 4th Euphonium.
  • Claire Rogers has moved from 2nd horn to 2nd Baritone.
  • Fred Leason has moved from the Solo Cornet bench to his favoured Tenor Horn and will play 2nd Horn.
  • Sarah Kissack has stepped up from Repiano to play Solo Cornet.

These moves mean that the band is in a stronger position coming into Christmas, and each player has a chance to challenge themselves further!

CANCELLED - Solo & Quartets Contest 19th October 2013
It is with much regret that the Committee has to announce that our planned Solo & Quartets contest on 19th October 2013 is now cancelled. This is due very few entries being received by the closing date which unfortunately means the contest is not logistically or financially viable. We do plan to review the situation in the future & would like to thank those of you who did enter & apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Some visitors at the Friday 13th Rehearsal

Last night we had some surprise visitors.

Former players, Neil and Amanda Wilkinson dropped in for a social call just to see how we were all doing.

In the 12 years since they played with us, there have been a number of personnel changes, and there were just 6 of us around when they played with us before. From those 6, just one has been an ever present - Ian Buckton.

It was great to see them, but disappointing to hear that they no longer play.

First Performance after our Summer Break was a good un!!
Burton Constable Hall was the venue for our Last Night of the Proms concert on Friday 6th September. A fantastic night was had by all & the audience were on fine form once again. Being sat within the band and looking out across a sea of Union Flags waving with the crowd in fine voice enjoying our performance really is something quite special. Thanks to all who came to see us for making it such a memorable night!!!

Player News

It is with some regret that I have to inform you that, due to a change in work pattern and heavy commitments with his family, Julian Gibbs has decided to step down from his position with Driffield Band.

Julian joined us towards the end of 2012 and has become an integral part of our trombone section. He has been a dedicated player, and a great personality wthin the band, he will most definitely be missed.

We wish him all the best, and he would be very welcome if his situation allowed him to return!

Driffield Infant School - Midsummer Fair

The band turned out on a surprisingly sunny and balmy Friday evening for the Driffield Infant School Mid-Summer Fair.

An appreciative audience was treated to a selection of tunes from the shows & some more contemporary numbers to sit out and enjoy the evening.

A big congratulations to Daryl who stepped up to the principal cornet chair for the evening, Kerrigan who stepped up to Solo Euphonium and to Margaret our new Solo Horn player for playing her first solo with us, On My Own from Les Miserables.

The performance was rounded off by a burger in the sunshine, what more could a bandsmen want...

Solo Contest - 19th October 2013

Just to keep you up to date on the Solo Contest;

  1. We have secured the facilities at Driffield School.
  2. We have secured the services of two fantastic adjudicators in Richard Grantham and Alan Morrison.
  3. We have contacted a large number of bands to drum up entries.
  4. We have contacted the local authorities to get yet more entries.

We need to source some financial help now.

The entry fees will not cover the running costs of the event, so we are looking for businesses/individuals to sponsor each of the age groups in each of the sections - 12 in all.

To pledge a donation, or to find out more about the contest, please follow the menu above and complete the contact form. We will do our best to answer any queries you may have.

Driffield Band in the Media!

In the past week, DSB have been on Look North, Radio 2, Radio Humberside and the BBC World Service. This has all been to do with our Solo Contest. This however was glossed over as all of the clever editing that they had done meant that their story was based on the fact that there are now only 6 brass bands in East Yorkshire, when there have been 52 separate bands.

To see the clips, please 'Like' our facebook page and follow the link.

Resignation & Position Change
Unfortunately our Euphonium player Simon Ainge has decided to resign from the band. He has been with us since August 2008, and will be a loss to the band as a player, a friend and a personality on the stand. We wish Simon all the best for the future & he is more than welcome to pop back & see us at anytime!!

With this news, I have decided to ask Joel Asbrey (who is a Euph player after all) to move onto playing 3rd Euph. I think he will learn a lot from sitting with the experienced Jim and Kerry, so that will start from Friday this week. Good luck Joel!!

At the rehearsal on Friday 15th Feb, we had a whole family of new players come along to join us.

Terry McDonough on Eb Bass, his wife Louise on Tenor Horn, and their daughter Katie on Cornet. They moved to the area in September and are a welcome addiition to the band.

With these additions to the band in recent weeks, we have a healthy membership. The attendance on Friday was an amazing 27 players, all we need now is a percussion section to complement the brass team. Any drummers/percussionists out there please get in touch...

2nd February 2013
Players' Player of the year for 2012

This position was voted on by the players in the band, and was awarded to...

  Richard Gregg

When we vote for this award, we ask for the reason behind each individual's nomination, and here are some of them;

  1. All his hard work
  2. Enthusiasm at all times
  3. He's done really well so far and has stepped up to the mark on the top chair. He has also done a lot of things behind the scenes with regards to making decisions, acting on them, and seeing things through. He has been, and am sure he will remain a valuable asset to the committee and the band.
  4. He has done a great job as Principal Cornet.
  5. He has played some great solos last year.
  6. Taking on the topman role and organising the DreamTeam football league.
  7. Took on his role with enthusiasm
  8. Stepping up to the Principal Cornet chair, as well as;
  • Transporting equipment to and from performances
  • Updating the equipment inventories
  • Promoting social activities for the band members
  • Seeking to promote the band through facebook
  • Frequent contributions to the band forum

As you can see, it is not just his playing ability which earned him this award, he has been the ideal bandsman too!
