Personnel Changes

I said there were some personnel changes within the band for 2013, and here is a summary of the situation at the moment;

Resignations from the band -

  • Les Heywood, who joined us on 2nd Horn in May this year, has chosen to step down from the band. He moved to the area to take things easy and ended up joining 4 different bands! He felt over committed and had to make a choice based on geography. As we were the band furthest from home, unfortunately we were the one to go.
  • Dianne ODonnell, has been with us for two years now, has also had to take a step away. An increased commitment at work has led to less time at home. To balance this she has had to give us up too.

Both of these people have been valued members of our team as well as great players. We wish them all the best, and if circumstances change, they will be very welcome back with us.

New player

  • Julian Gibbs has decided to join us on Bass Trombone. New to the area, we hope we help him to settle in.

Re-recruitment

  • Sophie Thompson has agreed to return to the band to play Solo Horn, this will leave me with the best kind of dilemma when Rachel returns after her maternity leave!
  • Clare Rogers has recently changed jobs, which has freed up her time on a Friday night. This means that she will return much more frequently in the new year, and to cover our gap on 2nd horn, she has agreed to give it a go! So a great thank you goes to Clare for agreeing to that.
  • Des Milburn will be returning on EEb bass following his enforced absense. Joint holder of the Players player of the year 2011, he has been missed this year!

Instrument Change

  • Michael Gregg has decided to return to his favoured instrument, the trombone. Providing we find an instrument for him, he will join the section from January.

Position changes

  • Heather Curnow and Ian Buckton have agreed to swap places, with Heather taking the Solo Trombone chair. Heather has recently been accepted into the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain, which is a fantastic achievement.

As an organisation we never stand still. These player changes will further enhance the band, and next year we have plans to record another CD and also to run a Solo and Quartet contest.

2013 will be an important year for us and we still need to recruit a few more players on Cornet, BBb bass and percussion.

We plan our concerts to be entertaining, please make an effort to come see us. If you have any feedback for us at all, please use the guestbook...

See you in 2013!

Driffield Silver Band played our final concert of the year to a capacity audience in the Royal Hall of the Bridlington Spa complex.

The annual Bridlington Lions Carol Concert was well attended and also well received.

Please watch this space for some announcements of personnel changes within the band for 2013!

New Member
After playing with us for a few weeks and helping out at the concerts at Scarborough Spa and Bridlington Spa, Pat Hunter has decided to join us on a more regular basis on Eb bass. We welcome him to our team and really hope he enjoys his time with us!

30th October 2012
Resignation
Our principal cornet player, Garry Forster, has had to take the decision to step down from the band with immediate effect.
His schedule at work has made it impossible for him to give the commitment he feels is necessary, so he has reluctantly had to take this decision.
A great friend to the band, he will be missed, however the door is always open for him to return as soon as his situation changes. We wish him all the best.

This now means that Richard Gregg will take over the hot seat for the Christmas concert series. Best of luck to Richard.

19th October 2012
New Player
At tonights rehearsal we had a visit from cornet player Andrew Sapcote. He enjoyed his visit so much he has decided to join us!

He will add to our solo cornet bench alongside Michael Gregg.

I hope he enjoys his time with us.

Profile Update
Solo Euphonium player Jim Johnson has updated his profile. See what he says in The Entertainers section of the website.

Summer Visitors
After playing with us for the past 5 weeks, Martin Jones unfortunately has to return to work so will no longer be able to join us on a Friday night. As his swansong he will be playing with us at the SOLDOUT Burton Constable concert on Friday next week.

Additionally, Andy and Joel Asbrey have decided to stick around to join us. We welcome them to our banding family, and hope they enjoy their time with us.

29th August 2012
Another member leaves

Unfortunately we have had another resignation.

One of our 2nd Baritone players, Jason Bassett has chosen to resign his position with the band with immediate effect.
Over the past two years he has been heavily committed to his university work and this has severley hampered his appearances with DSB. At the moment there is little prospect of this changing, so he has decided to step down.
We all wish him the very best in his career and the door will always be open for Jason to return.

2nd August 2012
More Visitors
We have had some more visitors at the rehearsal tonight; Andy and Joel Asbrey came to visit playing Baritone and Euphonium respectively. I hope they were made to feel very welcome and we would encourage them to return at any time.

1st August 2012
Defection!
Kerrigan Redman has taken the decision to revert to his first love, the Euphonium. He has played EEb bass with Driffield Band for a number of years now, and has been switching instruments when he plays with the Caravan Club Band. He will now join Jim & Simon in a section of three, leaving John and Des to fend for themselves...

His first concert on Euphonium will be at Burton Constable on the 7th September.

27th July 2012
Visitor
We had the great pleasure of a visitor tonight; Martin Jones came along to have a blow on tenor horn. I hope he enjoyed the evening. He will be welcome for a blow at any time.

17th July 2012
Sadly Missed
Driffield Silver Band are sorry to announce the sad passing of one of the great supporters of the band, Jim Kirkwood.

Jim had sat on our committee for a number of years, and in the past few years has been one of our trustees. He will be sadly missed.

8th July 2012
Bishop Wilton Show CANCELLED!
Due to the recent inclement weather, the organising committee of the Bishop Wilton Show have reluctantly taken the decision to cancel the show this year. The car park has been waterlogged for a number of weeks, and will not be suitable for any vehicles on the day.

Driffield Silver Band have already been booked to appear at the show in 2013, on Saturday 20th July.

28th May 2012
New Players!
Les Heywood has chosen to make himself available for our concerts, which is a fabulous result for us and our Horn section!

Additionally, the current Principal cornet player of the East Riding Youth Brass Band, Sarah Kissack has also joined the cornet section. She will sit next to Wendy on Repiano and further strengthens our cornet section.

A warm welcome to both of you from all of us!

12th May 2012
Visitor!

At the last couple of rehearsals, we have had a welcome visitor in the shape of Les Heywood, a Horn player!
Les has recently moved to the area and is looking for a band to join, and would certainly be a welcome addition to our horn team following the recent changes.

We hope Les will choose to join us, we will keep you updated...

29th April 2012
W.I. Last Night of the Proms Concert
We performed another varied programme at this concert, and owe a great deal of thanks to those who helped us - Mark Durham and his wife Sharon who played principal cornet and solo cornet respectively, Adrian Bell who played on BBb bass, Simon Miller who played 2nd Euphonium, and of course Jonathan Chapman and Stuart Sorrie who played as our percussion team for the night.

Another big thanks has to go to Daryl Dexter - after just 4 weeks on the solo cornet bench, he played assistant principal cornet - and fantastically well he played too.

20th April 2012
Another resignation - and a new player!
Sadly, Daniel Kardamis our 2nd Horn Player has taken the decision to step down from the band to focus on the Army Cadets. He has played with us since October 2010 and will definately be missed.

We are now advertising to fill this vacancy.

We are also pleased to anounce that local tuba star Paul Donoghue has chosen to join us - initially for a few months - and will take up position on the vacant BBb chair.
Until recently, Paul was the principal tuba player with the Barton Town Band whose dramatic rise up the echelons of Brass Bands saw them come 2nd in the North of England Championships and qualify them to play at the Royal Albert Hall in the National Finals against bands such as the Black Dyke, Brighouse & Rastrick and Desford Colliery Bands. A fantastic addition to our bass section.

30th March 2012
Resignation
Unfortunately, Sophie Thompson our 1st Horn player has decided to leave the band. She has a number of other talents which are taking up a lot of her time, and something had to go. Although we are all disappointed, we wish her all the very best and will welcome her back at any time.

Denise Massey will step up to fill this vacancy.

23rd March 2012
Cornet Section Re-shuffle
We have re-organised the cornet section to balance things up a bit better. Daryl Dexter has moved up onto the Solo Cornet bench from 2nd Cornet, and Michael Townend has moved up to 2nd Cornet from 3rd.

27th February 2012
Profile Update
Another new member - Dianne ODonnell has also submitted a profile. See who she is on the Entertainers section of the website.

14th February 2012
Valentines Day!
I hope they enjoyed their romantic night in - Mick Gravill and Gill Mill have updated their profiles.

10th February 2012
AGM

Our AGM was an eventful evening where we had some fantastic support from throughout the band.

  • Malcolm Kellett has been voted back in as Vice Chairman.
  • Jim Johnson has formally been voted as Band Sergeant.

We have new band reps in

  • Michael Gregg
  • Richard Gregg
  • Mark Lynch
  • Michael Gravill

Additionally, we have also decided to run a Solos & Quartets contest. A sub-committee is to be formed with Kerrigan Redman taking a leading role to get this organised. Any support anybody can bring to this will be greatly appreciated.

Finally, the Players Player of the Year for 2011 was presented to two people this year;

  • Des Milburn - for his commitment to the band throughout the year despite a difficult year for him.
  • Ian Buckton - for his unrelenting work behind the scenes, and leading his section.

In a footnote, I formally welcomed the new players to the band, Michael Gravill, Gill Mill, Dianne ODonnell, Michael Townend and Mark Lynch - however I completely forgot about Michael Gregg - I hope he accepts my appologies.

3rd February 2012
More visitors
At our rehearsal last night we had some visitors join us.

Vince Turton and Bryan Robson both came to play BBb bass, and we also had Dianne OConnell return on cornet.

Dianne played with us for a few weeks in 2010, but was unable to commit. Thanks to all of them, and I hope they wish to play with us on a regular basis.

21st January 2012
Band Meal
Last night saw a number of the band go out on what feels like a very rare event - we went out to socialise with each other!

We took it as a chance to let our hair down without the need to take to the stage.

A meal at the Oyster Catcher pub followed by a game of ten-pin bowling at the Hollywood Bowl we got to see each other outside of the band environment. Didnt that raise a few eyebrows!

Without going into detail, the conversation at times was a little risque...

The bowling was a tale of sorry woes and appalling peformance. Ranging from the unheard of score of 50 from Mally and Heidi, to the impressive 129 from Joe. Without a doubt though the performance of the evening was from Professor Michael Gravell with an unrivalled 147!

Lets hope this is the first of many social events from DSB.

13th January 2012
New Cornet Player
At just our 2nd rehearsal of the year we had a visit from Michael Townend. He has had a short spell out of playing recently and is looking to get back into playing regularly. A very welcome addition, and I hope he enjoys his time with us.

Also making a welcome return with us was Peter Kench, and he also brought along Heidi Ringrose to help on the cornet bench for the rehearsal. Heidi is welcome to come back at any time!
