The year ends on a high!
DSB played at the annual Bridlington Lions Carols concert again this year, and it was very well attended, almost a full house.
This concert brings our year to a close, and we will be back for rehearsal on the 6th January 2012.

We hope that everyone has a great Christmas, and a Happy & Healthy New Year!

Good News and not so Good
Experienced Bb Bass player Ian Backhouse has managed to score himself a job in Switzerland! so he will be re-locating in the near future. Good luck to Ian with this great opportunity!

Unfortunately for DSB, this will open up another vacancy on Bb Bass, leaving us without any!

Additionally, it also means that his daughters Rebecca and Emily will also be unable to attend rehearsals - this is a big loss to the band, they shall all be missed.

Please make everybody you know, aware of the vacancies, and send them along. We have great fun and make great music. Everybody is welcome.

15th October 2011
Vacancies
We are now in the position that we have two vacancies on cornet (positions negotiable), Bb Bass and also a percussion section.

In addition, we would welcome players in other sections too. Shift patterns and other commitments on a Friday night often interfere with rehearsals, so any players wishing to have a blow on a Friday would be welcome too!

Players Moving on

September is the time of year when those of the appropriate age move on to go to university. This year we will be losing some of our cornet players.

  • James Ledger is off to study pharmacy.
  • Sam Thompson is going to Nottingham Trent University to study Criminilogy.
  • Toby Woodall is to study in Harrogate.

Good luck to you all. We hope you come back to visit during the holidays!

VP Passes Away
Fred Robson, the co-composer of Capital of the Wolds - our signature tune, has passed away on Wednesday August 17th 2011.

His funeral was held in Driffield Parish Church on Thursday 25th August, and DSB played Capital of the Wolds and also the Alfred Bean Hospital March.

Toby Woodall played the last post particularly well, and received many complements from Freds family.

Fred will be greatly missed, though his music will live on.

New Player
Following a recent re-location back to East Yorkshire, Michael Gregg has decided to join his twin brother Richard and sister-in-law Jo-Anne playing cornet with DSB. Another welcome addition to our growing band. He will further strengthen our cornet team.

Driffield Show

We played at the annual Driffield Show again this year. This is the UKs biggest one day agricultural show.

This event has always been blessed by fantastic weather - not this year. It rained continuously throughout the day.

Despite this, the band played really well, and around the stand we had a few old friends who came back for a blow.

  • Graham Walker returned to the principal cornet chair for the day
  • Polly and Jenny Meadows returned to play Cornet & Horn
  • Craig Brown returned to cover the Solo Trombone position

Additionally we had Dave D-B covering on Bb Bass.

Thanks go to each of those and our own players for another great performance.

The Visitors Just Keep on Coming
This Friday we had another cornet player come down to visit. Peter Kench, a student at Hull University and resident of Bridlington came down for our rehearsal, although unable to commit full time, he will help us out when he is available. A warm welcome to Peter.

Busy Weekend
This weekend has been a busy one with concerts on consecutive nights.

The first - in the grounds of Burton Agnes Hall - was for the St Affrique Twinning Association. The audience was much bigger than previous concerts there, so we hope they managed to raise a great sum of money.

The second - on the North Cave Playing Fields - was part of their Gala Weekend celebrations. The band were joined in the second half by concert organiser and Soprano singer Lesley Julian in the traditional Last Night of the Proms event.

A busy weekend, but very satisfying!

Another Visitor
This time we had the pleasure of Mark Lynch from Beverley playing cornet with us. If you add him to Adrian, Mick and Gill also returning for the rehearsal, we have had a healthy influx of players.

All of these players have made themselves available for our concerts over the next few weeks and are welcome additions to our band.

More Visitors
This week, Adrian returned with a friend in tow - Graham from County Durham - another cornet player. We also had another couple of visitors in the shape of Mick on flugel, and Gill on Baritone. Mick is interested in filling the flugel vacancy, and would like to try us out again next week, so watch this space...

13th May 2011
Guest
This week, local cornet player Adrian Dunn accepted an invitation to join us for a rehearsal. He enjoyed it so much he asked whether he could come back again next week!

Its great to have him with us, and the invitation is open to any other players whod like to come down.

30th April 2011
Visitors

We had the pleasure of some visitors in April; Jenny Meadows - former Baritone / Bass player with DSB (and sister to Lucy Grantham) - returned on Horn this time for a couple of rehearsals, and she brought her boyfriend David to play on Trombone.

If any other players visiting Driffield wish to drop on on us for a blow, you will be more than welcome.

27th March 2011
Bob Dales Memorial Concert

We had a number of presentations to make at the concert this year partly due to the cancellation of the Christmas Concert due to the inclement weather.

  • Fred Robson was awarded the honorary position of Vice President following his 77 year association with DSB.
  • Fred then presented George Riggs with a copy of The Bell Hotel Grand March which had it's premier at the concert.
  • The Tony Wilson Award - for outstanding contribution to the Band - was awarded to our Librarian Dee Horner
  • The Norman Blades Award - for most improved player - was awarded to Heather Curnow.

18th February 2011
AGM

After another successful year, our AGM went very smoothly. There were no changes to the office bearers, and Andy Grace was appointed Musical Director for another year.

The Players Player of the Year award was split two ways this year;

  • Wendy Brayshaw was nominated for being immensely supportive of the band as a whole, and of individual players too.
  • Peter Horner was nominated for his positive attitude and approach to his numerous commitments.

Congratulations to you both.

Resignation
Reluctantly, due to personal reasons, Mike Waudby - our Flugel Player - has had to resign his position with the band. Mike only joined in April 2010, and has been a fantastic soloist across the year. He will be missed.

He has offered to help us at concerts until we are able to recruit a replacement. So if anybody is interested in the Flugel position with us, please get in touch through the Contact Us section of the website.

21st January 2011
New Players
We have recently had a couple of new players come to the band. Eric (trombone) and Margaret (tenor horn) Milburn. Both had been long term members of the Beverley Brass Band, and have had a short sabbatical away from playing. They wanted to start up again and have chosen to join Eric's brother Des at DSB.

We welcome them both and hope they enjoy their time with us.

16th January 2011
Resignation
Unfortunately Andy Rogers, one of our 2nd Cornet players, has had to resign his position with the band.

Since he joined in March 2010, his shift patterns at work changed which made it difficult for him to attend rehearsals and jobs, and subsequently they have changed again - not for the better.

He didn't get the opportunity to establish himself with the band, however he will always be welcome if he is able to make a return.

We wish him all the best!
