Jane Clayton - Flugelhorn
Jane began playing the cornet at the age of 9 under the tuition of Eric Smith, a talented jazz musician from the Gordon Tetley Band.
Jane joined the Clayton 69 marching band. She began competing against Simon Ainge (currently 2nd Euphonium at Driffield Silver Band) in the National Youth Matching competitions. Jane was first Trumpet and Simon was Drum major, during these years Jane and Simon were unknown to each other.
6 years into playing, Jane moved towards brass bands under the guidance of Ann Hardy and Chris Wood both talented players with involvement with the Queensbury Band and Hammonds Sauce Works Band. Jane played with Queensbury Music Centre junior band and Hammonds Junior B Band. At Hammonds Jane crossed paths with Mark Naylor on percussion (currently at Driffield Silver Band). Due to the hard work and high standard needed at Hammonds Jane moved to the front row and enjoyed many years competing and playing in Germany.
Janes standard of playing increased and she moved into The Queensbury Band. She began to progress up the back row as the band progressed through the sections and reaching the Championship section, playing against Black Dyke, Brighouse and Rastick.
In 1999 Jane moved from West Yorkshire to the East Coast and began a family.
2010 Jane began playing flugel in an amateur jazz group called Revamp.
In 2016 Jane bumped into Simon Ainge and the discussion of joining Driffield Silver Band began.
In Jan 2018 Jane joined Driffield Silver Band.
To be part of an amazing team of musicians, who share their musical talents to entertain the community, young and old, is wonderful. The Driffield Sliver Band supports the growth of players musically and helping them to reach their individual potential is truly enlightening. I am honoured to be part of Driffield Silver Band which feels like one big happy family of talented musicians.
In 2021 Jane moved up to the Flugelhorn seat
